Air Marshal CR Dunlap, CBE, CD
Inducted to Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame
by LGen (Ret) RJ Lane

Air Marshal CR "Larry" Dunlap was inducted into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame May 25, 2002. He has been a member of RUSI in Victoria since 1974.

This year's three inductees were honoured at a dinner in the Vancouver International Airport's rotunda. The Aviation Hall's citation for the Air Marshal read...

"His distinguished career as a military aviator in war and in peace time, demonstrating extraordinary skill and leadership in a life-time of achievement, have earned the respect of his peers and brought great credit to his nation."

portrait of Air Marshal Dunlap Air Marshal Dunlap of Victoria, BC, the last living RCAF air marshal, had an outstanding career both in war and peacetime. During the Second World War, he served in operations against the enemy in the United Kingdom and in the Middle East. He is a past RCAF Chief of the Air Force Staff and a Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the North American Air Defence Command.

Following retirement from active service in 1968 while at NORAD, he proved his dedication to the cause of Canadian aviation with his full-time voluntary work aimed at obtaining funding for and construction of the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa.

At the induction ceremony, his wife Hester, members of his family, some who had come a long way to be present, surrounded him. In addition to his family, several friends were in attendance, including the President of the Aircrew Association, Vancouver Island Branch. During the ceremony, Larry gave a short resume of his life in the Air Force, which brought back memories of bygone days for many present.

The Aviation Hall of Fame pays tribute to those people who pioneer or advance aviation in Canada. Those accepted are the select few whose contribution to aviation has been of an exceptional nature. Coming from all areas of Canada, they have led extraordinary lives as military and civilian pilots, navigators, doctors, scientists, inventors, engineers and administrators. The home of the Hall is at the Reynolds-Alberta Museum, Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

A great honour indeed for the Air Marshal, now in his 94th year, and we all congratulate him. end of page
