Lieutenant-Commander Scott McVicar joined the Canadian Navy aged 18. Educated under the Regular Officer Training Plan at Royal Roads Military College in Victoria and the Royal Military College in Kingston, he graduated in 1985 achieving a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
Lieutenant-Commander McVicar volunteered for the Submarine Service in 1986. After obtaining his Dolphins, he qualified as an Under-Water Warfare Director and then as a Navigation Officer. In 1992 he completed the Submarine Weapons and Operations Course and subsequently served as the Operations Officer aboard both HMCS OJIBWA and HMCS OKANAGAN. After attending the Attack Coordinator's Course in Australia in 1994, he served as Executive Officer aboard HMCS OJIBWA.
Lieutenant-Commander McVicar attended and successfully completed the Submarine Commanding Officers Course (SMCOC) in 2000.
During his career in submarines, Lieutenant-Commander McVicar has had two shore postings. From 1991 until 1993 he was on the staff of the Canadian SUBOBPAUTH in MARLANT Headquarters. Following his time as Executive Officer, he was posted to the position of Submarine Tactics Officer in the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre where he served until assuming command of HMCS Victoria in August of 2001.
LCdr McVicar is married. His wife, Linda, and their three daughters currently reside in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

| Biographical Sketch: |
Dr David Zimmerman is a professor of military history at the UVic, Department of History. He earned his BA degree in history at the U of Toronto in 1981. His MA in history in 1983 and his PhD in history in 1987, were both from the Univ of New Brunswick. The title of his doctoral thesis was "Northern Waves: Science, Technology and the Royal Canadian Navy, 1939-45." Dr. Zimmerman has agreed to head the UVic Military Studies project with our RUSI of VI team, thus assisting graduate students in recording individual veterans’ military histories and experiences within a variety of military themes during their service.

Major Richard Eaton is ‘A’ Company commander, The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada; a militia regt in Vancouver. Born and raised in Vancouver, he joined the British Army, attended Sandhurst and served between 1981 and 1989 with the Parachute Regiment. He also completed a two-year exchange with the Royal Marines. In addition to serving in Norway, the Middle East and elsewhere in Europe, he completed three tours of duty in Northern Ireland. There he was a platoon commander, company ops officer and acting company commander in various areas including Belfast, Fermanagh and South Armagh. Maj Eaton is a partner in his own Victoria based management consulting firm, Berlin, Eaton & Associates Ltd.
